Everybody knows that Friday the 13th is meant to be unlucky. It doesn't matter what month the auspicious date falls in, people think it's bad and bad things are expected to happen. But where did all this hooplah start?
The sixth day of the week and the number 13 both have foreboding reputations said to date from ancient times. But one explanation for this prevalent superstition cannot be pinned down. One story has it linked to the arrest of the Knights Templar in France on Friday the 13th of October, 1307. Another connects the superstition to the fact 12 is a lucky number in the Bible, so that the number following it (13) was thought to be evil. Known scientifically as "Tridecaphobia," fear of the number 13 is probably the most common of all superstitions. Most buildings don't even have a 13th floor!
However, research validates that "paraskevidekatriaphobics" (or people afflicted with a morbid, irrational fear of Friday the 13th) are most likely to experience any "bad luck" if there is such a thing, on this day, proving that we do, in fact, create our own realities.
