Are her characters destined?

Her luminous beauty and command of every character she plays has made Australian-born actor Cate Blanchett a dazzling superstar. She is the Meryl Streep of her generation - never afraid to tackle a role no matter how complicated (Elizabeth I) or out of character (Bob Dylan) it may be.

In a rare move for Hollywood, she received double Oscar nominations this year (2008): as best actress for her role as Elizabeth I in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and for best supporting actress for her extraordinary portrayal of Bob Dylan in I'm Not There.

On an astrological level, we wanted to know if destiny has played a firm role in bringing Blanchett together with the characters she has chosen to play - especially Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn's only daughter. In digging deeper into her chart, it certainly seems as though it does!

Crowning achievement
Born on May 14, 1969, this Taurus leading lady is the first woman to receive nominations for the same role in two different films - one for best actress in Elizabeth (1998) and then the sequel, Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). So it's no wonder that she has a remarkable astrological connection to the celebrated female ruler of England's golden age.

Elizabeth, known as the Virgin Queen, was fittingly born under the sign of Virgo, the virgin. This means she's an earth sign like Blanchett. Even more intriguing, she had Moon in Taurus, which is Blanchett's Sun sign - and perhaps her Moon sign as well, depending on Blanchett's time of birth. These astrological ties made her unusually in tune with the role (and perhaps the spirit) of Elizabeth, heightening the realism of her performance. What's more, there's a spiritual connection between them as well. Blanchett's Jupiter (luck) and Pluto (power) in Virgo fall directly on Elizabeth's Sun in Virgo. The Jupiter tie helped bring Blanchett acclaim for her performance, which was given depth by the Pluto connection. Obviously, she was destined to play this particular queen.

No boundaries allowed
On a personal level, her essence seems delicate and made of iron all at once. She appears to be someone who was meant to live the life she does - one that affects those who are enraptured by her equal parts beauty and intelligence. But even with all this grace, Blanchett is anything but pretentious. Her earth-sign emphasis says she's sensual, strong-willed and real. However, Neptune opposing her Sun modifies this earthiness by heightening her psychic sensitivity and imagination (strangely, Elizabeth had this influence as well). In an actor's chart, a strong Neptune weakens emotional and mental boundaries and allows the actor to merge with the character's essence and bring the role to life. This is why certain actors - Blanchett included - seem to "channel" their characters.

Tangled up in Bob
However, all earth and no fire would make for some lackluster performances. Fortunately, Blanchett has a double dose of fire signs, with Venus in Aries and Mars in Sagittarius. These placements give her the courage to explore unusual roles. Never is this more evident than in her role as one of Bob Dylan's incarnations in I'm Not There. That electrifying performance earned Blanchett an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.

As you may have guessed, Blanchett has an amazing connection to Dylan as well. His Sun and Venus in Gemini are conjunct Blanchett's Mercury in Gemini. Mercury rules the mind, so Blanchett was able to get inside the illusive singer/songwriter's head. But the most startling tie is Dylan's Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus in Taurus conjunct her Sun. That compelling series of conjunctions suggests not only an artistic bond, but a karmic one as well.

Facing the mirror
But perhaps the closest connection is between Blanchett and another superb Taurus actress, whom she portrayed in The Aviator: Katharine Hepburn. Like Blanchett, Hepburn had Sun and Moon in Taurus and Venus in Aries. Their astrological similarities undoubtedly helped Blanchett win an Oscar for best supporting actress for her Hepburnian performance.

There's no doubt that astrology can play a part in creating great performances. As for Blanchett, it's obvious that some intuitive guidance (or a good astrologer?) helped her choose the roles that would make her a luminary with a place in history.
