The unassuming Jeane Dixon is considered the leading psychic of the modern age. Born in 1918 in Wisconsin, she grew up in California and later established a successful real estate business in Washington, D.C. with her husband, James. Dixon believed her powers were a gift from God. Thus, she directed any income made on her books and popular syndicated horoscope column into the Children to Children foundation.
Although she rarely appeared on television, she became a celebrity in 1956 when she predicted that a Democrat would be elected as the next President and would die while in office. She was largely ignored until President John F. Kennedy was elected and assassinated in 1963. She had warned him not to go to Dallas, Texas. After that, skeptics coined the term "The Jeane Dixon Effect," referring to any instance where a psychic gets a prediction right while their wrong ones are simply ignored.
For instance, five years later, Dixon was addressing a meeting in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles when a questioner asked if Robert Kennedy would ever become President. "No," she answered. "He will never become President of the United States because of a tragedy right here in this hotel." A week later, Robert Kennedy won the California primary. Moments after addressing a victory rally from the stage of the Ambassador Hotel's ballroom, he was shot. He died the following day.
Many more of Ms. Dixon's predictions went on to come true. Sadly, she foresaw the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. as well. She also predicted the deaths of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and actress Carole Lombard after touching their hands. She told Ms. Lombard not to fly but the beauty was on a tour promoting War Bonds during World War II and did not want to interrupt her travel schedule. Tragically, she was killed the same night in a place crash.
