Fall Beauty Treatments
Natural skincare tips
by Martine Jeanne Craughley
After months of sun, skin needs some natural nourishment to get it into shape before the dry days of winter. At this time of year there's an abundance of fruits, nuts and grains you can combine into beauty treatments that soothe, protect and refine your skin.
If you have a Black Walnut tree in your yard you can make a tea with the leaves and use it to deepen and heighten the brown and auburn in your hair.
Facial masks
You can use pumpkin, honey and yogurt for a toning, pore cleansing mask. The pumpkin has enzymes, zinc, and a healthy dose of vitamins C and A. The sugars in honey have exfoliating properties. Yogurt is soothing, cooling and hydrating. Mash a quarter cup of pumpkin pulp, a teaspoon of honey and a quarter cup of yogurt together, and apply to your washed face.
Cocoa powder also has antioxidant properties, zinc and potassium. It can be used in a facial mask with water and an egg white, or even sprinkled liberally in a hot bath. It's wonderful for the skin, comforting to the senses, and feels satisfyingly indulgent.
If your skin needs an exfoliating mask to tighten pores and remove impurities, take an organic egg white and beat it to a froth. Smooth it onto your face and relax. Once it hardens, wash it off with a soft cloth. The amino acids and natural proteins do wonders for the skin.
Natural moisturizers
Oatmeal soothes skin, helps with dry skin and skin problems, and is protective and moisturizing. Take a cup of natural, (not instant) rolled oats, wrap in cheesecloth, and boil for 20 minutes. Let it cool and use the wrapped oatmeal in the bath against the skin like a loofah. Then just soak in the water with the oatmeal and let it work its healing magic on your skin. There's no need for soap, oatmeal cleanses and purifies.
Olive oil is a miracle for skin, nails and hair. Use high quality, extra virgin oil after a shower or bath, stroke it gently onto your body and let your skin drink it in. It gives skin a suppleness and radiance without clogging pores. Heat it gently and it's a wonderful conditioner for hair. And if you suffer from cracked heels, soak your tired feet in olive oil. Over time, it will help rebuild the moisture reserves in the skin and heal the cracks.
If you want a natural body scrub, you can combine fresh coffee grounds, brown sugar, sea salt and cocoa with olive oil. Take an old yogurt tub, then add a couple of inches of olive oil; add the other ingredients to your taste being sure that the scrub always feels smooth.
Organic food facial masks:
Organic applesauce contains calcium, vitamin A and beneficial acids for toning the skin.
Mashed avocado offers Vitamin A, Vitamin E and healing proteins that soothe dry skin.
Mashed banana is full of potassium with both calcium and phosphorus making it wonderful for all but the oiliest skin.
Mashed papaya brings active papain enzymes to energize and clarify your skin, while also containing beta carotene and Vitamin C.
Ground ginger root has powerful potassium that helps increase circulation and metabolism for a more vital look.
Fall's bountiful harvest can improve the quality of your skin with pure, natural ingredients. It's a feast of natural tastes, textures and smells, allowing you to beautify and refresh... and to turn over a new leaf - so to speak!
