So you've got the hots for someone in the office downstairs. The problem is you just can't tell if they feel the same way about you. You could just ask, but it might be embarrassing or even worse, inappropriate considering you've had all of a two line conversation once while waiting for the elevator. The good news is, there are ways you can tell if they're interested without hanging your heart on your sleeve and risking seeming desperate (which you're not!). Their signs are subtle, and to us may even seem simple, but there are a few behaviors people reserve for one another when they're serious about getting to know them. And some of these signals are subconscious - they don't even know they're giving them off!
Take note if: You catch them staring.
Taking notice of what someone is staring at can tell you a lot. If you happen to catch them fixating on your eyes or your hands or your neck (you get the idea) when you're in line at Starbucks or you notice them gazing at you across the room at a party, it's likely that they dig you.
Take the hint if: His eyes wander when you're talking.
If you're in the middle of telling a story or asking them a question about something they've said and they can't maintain focus because they're too busy checking out the scenery, then they're just not that interested in what you have to say - which means they're not that interested in you.
Take note if: Their body language indicates you're the center of their attention.
If their chest and shoulders are facing you, even though they may be looking at someone else, signs are good that you're their major focus. In fact, whether it's you, their best friend or the person in the corner, whatever a person aims their upper body at, is said to be the most meaningful thing in the room to them. It goes back to our primal instincts. Experts say animals turn their chests to the most important presence in their environments so that they can be prepared to deal with it head-on without getting blindsided. When your brain picks up on something significant, your torso turns to it without thinking.
Take the hint if: Their body language says they're otherwise occupied.
If your date gives you the cheek while you speak, they're literally cutting off the conversation. Worse than simply checking out the scenery, they're making it clear that they're ignoring you - even if they tell you they've heard everything you said.
