Alexander (ext. 9483). He recalls sharing this information recently with a young man by the name of Jeremiah*.
Jeremiah made it clear that he didn't believe in readings; he was only calling out of curiosity. Alexander, who is a Tarot master with more than 30 years of experience, instantly felt that this 22 year-old from San Francisco was deeply sad. He laid out the cards in a variation of the Celtic cross and asked Father Sky and Mother Earth to guide him through the reading.
Alexander turned one horrible card over after the other: the Tower, the Devil, Death and the 7,8,9 and 10 of Swords from the Minor Arcana.
"'Oh dear,' I thought to myself. There were some major difficulties happening in this boy's life. Traditionally, a predominance of Swords in a spread signals arguments, illness, and even death. Not to mention that the other cards showed major upheaval. His problems seemed cumulative and I felt like the guy was very near death by his own hands. At the very least his thought process, his mind had turned against himself," explains Alexander.
At first, he didn't know how to proceed.
"I have to be honest with you Jeremiah," he began, "my cards and my senses tell me that there's major chaos, agony and suffering in your life right now. It looks look like you're on the verge of death. I hope I am wrong about this."
The phone went silent for a moment and then Alexander heard muffled sobs.
Jeremiah confessed that he had two large stitched-up slits on either of his wrists. He'd been discharged from the hospital just two days before. He'd tried to commit suicide and would have succeeded if his roommate hadn't come home early from school.
Jeremiah couldn't believe Alexander had picked up on this. He was shocked.
"Tell me what happened," Alexander asked gently. He had a hunch that it involved a former lover.
Sure enough, Jeremiah had been in love with someone who didn't love him back. After six months, his lover left him for someone else. Jeremiah felt destroyed. He'd come out of the closet for this man.
"I know it's hard to believe this, but the hurt you are feeling and going through now will pass. The thing is, you've become attached to the pain. But you aren't the pain," Alexander told him. "Every incident is a lesson. This is an opportunity for you to love and accept yourself. Someone else's love doesn't make you valuable. You can handle this but you have to make a conscious effort to do so. Do you understand?"
"Kind of," Jeremiah replied. He told Alexander that this was the first time someone had showed him compassion rather then condemnation. He was having a difficult time surviving because his parents didn't accept that he was gay.
"I've always wanted to believe in something more and I know this is crazy but this reading showed me that there is something greater out there than me. There's no way you could have known this about me. Thank you," he added.
Alexander gave him several affirmations and the number to a suicide hotline. He also asked Jeremiah to promise that he would breathe through the pain and call back him back if ever he was having dark thoughts to end his life.
Eight months later, Jeremiah called him again. He had gone into counseling and had adopted a spiritual practice through a church that welcomed gay people. He was accepting and loving himself for the first time.
