Immediately, Sheila knew this man was bad news. "I felt that he was possessive, arrogant and bad-tempered. Subconsciously, I sensed that my client also knew that her husband was mistreating her, but she needed help bringing this realization to the surface. She didn't yet know how to trust her intuition."
Sheila asked Naomi to describe her relationship and it wasn't long before she divulged that Robert (not his real name) often berated her in front of their two children - he regularly criticized and put her down.
"Honey, that's abuse," Sheila informed her. Naomi began to cry. She'd swept things under the rug for far too long - 21 years to be exact. And now that the kids were older she could feel a pang of dissatisfaction burgeoning in her belly. But she needed strength to break the patterns she'd lived with for so many years. In short, she needed Sheila's help.
First, Sheila suggested she ask Robert to move out. Naomi needed to physically separate herself from him even before a divorce went through. She also needed to understand that she had endured the abuse due to deep-rooted beliefs of unworthiness. These beliefs needed to be eradicated and replaced.
"You believe that you can't do better than him. But you can. You feel that you're unworthy. But you deserve to feel cherished. In fact, I see someone on the horizon but I want you to concentrate on you right now. I want you to get situated in a new and better reality before we talk about other men."
Of course, this gave Naomi a flicker of hope. Next, Sheila suggested that her client take a painting class (Naomi used to paint pre-Robert) or join a yoga practice. She needed some Naomi-time. She needed to discover herself all over again. Before concluding the call, Sheila warned her not to be fooled… her husband would be nice to her because he too was afraid to be on his own but it was only a façade.
Naomi called several weeks later. Her soon-to-be ex had moved out of the house. She explained that it wasn't easy when she asked him to leave. Robert had pleaded for her to reconsider. He apologized and even brought her flowers. It was hard to resist, but luckily she remembered what Sheila had said and stuck to her guns. The "new" Robert quickly disintegrated and he was back to his old tricks. He called her a "home wrecker" and "useless" in front of their kids. Naomi felt an enormous amount of guilt for separating the family, yet she now knew in her heart that she was doing the right thing. She'd made contact with her intuition!
"I knew it was time to think for myself and to think about myself," she told Sheila, who continued to give her support and remind her that she deserved better.
During one of numerous calls, Sheila picked up the fact that Robert was hiding money from her and that he was worth a lot more than he claimed. Naomi hired a private investigator and, sure enough, he had assets that he'd hidden from her and the kids.
With every passing day, Naomi knew that she and her kids deserved a fulfilling life full of peace and positivity.
Months later, Naomi was ready to ask Sheila about this man she'd initially alluded to.
"I told her that he was a friend of hers - a teacher." Interestingly, this teacher friend had recently asked her out. Sheila told her to take it slow but to go for it.
Today, the two are an item. Naomi was hesitant at first since she'd misjudged once before. The difference was now she knew her worth and she knew how to check in with her intuition. She felt good about this man. He valued and appreciated her because she now valued and appreciated herself. Naomi had committed to a life of fulfillment. She no longer wanted to settle for less and in the interim she had slowly turned her life around.
