Divorce ranks high as one of the most stressful events a person can experience in life, second only to the death of a loved one. Getting over a divorce can be an intense process. "In many ways, divorce is a sort of death," says Mystic (ext. 9213), who has spent 15 years studying various forms of astrology - Kabalistic, Western and Magi. "The deep connection created by the joining of karma in marriage and the undoing of this "karma" in divorce, takes time to heal."

Here's what Mystic said:

When a person gets married, they literally are joining their own "karma" with that of their partner's "karma." So when we divorce, we sever this spiritual bond as we break our karma away from that of our marriage partner.

It's no wonder that many people experience a tremendous feeling of "relief" or a "lightness" once the divorce is final, if they are leaving a negative situation or person. We can suffer a great deal when we are taken down by the negative karma of the wrong partner. But, whether the divorce is a relief or a shock, once it is final, give yourself the bare minimum of three months to mourn the death of this relationship, this experience, this "karma."

This mourning period gives the soul a chance to cleanse out remnants of this past connection. At the same time, we are allowing ourselves to become reacquainted with our single selves, slowly learning who we have become as a result of the many changes and challenges a divorce can present us. We are no longer "so and so's" wife or husband, and with that shift in identity alone, there is often a great sense of loss and confusion.

Most people who have gone through a divorce say they have an inner knowing when they are ready to release this past. People who have been married for many years, may feel a natural need to spend more time in this process of releasing the old karma. So, for some, three years may be appropriate. If the mourning process becomes overwhelming, or you are concerned with your recovery time, seek the support of a spiritual counselor, attend support groups or look into therapy.

By honoring this crucial time after a divorce, you can eventually move on with less baggage, and look forward to an emotionally healthier, happier future.
